Installing Microsoft Workgroup Connection software on Aleph One PC Cards
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Introduction
------------

Microsoft's Workgroup Connection software is an MS-DOS client for Lan-
Manager based networks. In other words, using it will allow the PC Card to
connect to network servers using MS's LAN Manager, Windows NT / NTAS,
IBM's LAN Server and similar software. These notes give instructions for
setting up.

Requirements
------------

You should have !PC version 1.50 or later, with the Aleph One network
driver software installed. See the file README/NET for full details.

Workgroup Connection software can be bought from Microsoft, or, if you
have access to FTP, it can be downloaded (for free) from ftp.microsoft.com
as the file /advsys/msclient/dos/35/mswgcn.exe .

Installation
------------

First, make sure that (on the RISCOS side) you have copied the network
drivers ETHER3 and PCNE2 as explained in the Net_Readme file. Make sure
that the !Run file in the !PC directory contains the lines

  RMEnsure Ether3 1.31 RMLoad <Obey$Dir>.ETHER3
RMEnsure Ether3 1.31 Error <Obey$Dir>.ETHER3 not found or too old

and

  RMEnsure PCNE2 1.50 RMLoad <Obey$Dir>.PCNE2
RMEnsure PCNE2 1.50 Error <Obey$Dir>.PCNE2 not found or too old

without 'comment' characters ( | ) at the starts of the line.

Also make sure that you have version 1.50 or later of the !PC application;
earlier versions do not work correctly with the Workgroup Connection
software. Contact Aleph One technical support if you need an upgrade.

With this done, start up the PC card and boot DOS. If you have any DOS
networking software already installed, it is best to remove it completely
before proceeding.

Place the Workgroup Connection disk in the drive and at the 'C:\>' DOS
prompt type the lines

   A:
   SETUP

to run the SETUP program. Then, follow the instructions on the screen in
conjunction with the notes below.

Setup notes
-----------

1. SETUP will ask which directory you want the network software installed
into. Normally it will come up with C:\DOS, the place where all your other
MSDOS files are installed. You may want to change this to a new name (e.g.
C:\WGCONN) as it makes it easier to remove the software at a later date.

2. On the 'choose network card' screen you are given a list of types of
network card. The PCNE2 module emulates an NE2000 card: press Page Down
and user the cursor keys to select the "NE2000 Compatible" option.

3. The 'Computer Name' screen asks you to give a name to your computer. If
the machine has been given a name by your network manager, use it here.
Otherwise, you can pick any name as long as it is different from all the
other machines on the network.

4. You will then be given a summary of the options you have chosen so far.
Unless you are going to use Microsoft Mail on the network, you can save
time and disk space by changing the 'Install Mail Files' option to 'Do not
Install Mail Files'.

5. The machine asks for some settings in the 'NE2000 Compatible' box.
These need to be changed! You will need to set

   IOBASE to be 340

and

   INTERRUPT to be 5

Without this, the software will not function correctly.

6. SETUP will then copy some files and install the software. You then need
to re-start MS-DOS. If all is well, the software will load up and you will
be asked to log on to the network.

All of the network functions are accessed using the NET command. Type

   NET HELP

for more information.
